Icon Tutorial for Paint Shop Pro 7

Basic knowledge of Paint Shop Pro is required for this tutorial. Click on the bolded words for screenshots and please see my Graphic Tips or the Blend Tutorial for some helpful hints.

We are going from this picture of Elizabeth from Atlantis to

Crop your picture to 100x100 and try not to center it, pick an interesting crop. I came up with this as a base:

Duplicate the base 3 times and set them all to Screen. Use the Unsharp Mask Tool on all 4 copies. Radius 2.00, Strength 50, Clipping 5.

Copy all of the layers using Copy Merged and Paste As New Layer on top.  Zoom in and use your Smudge Tool (size 12, opacity 8) to smooth out her skin, avoiding the eyes and lips. Next use the Sharpen Tool (size 9, opacity 19) on the eyes and lips. This brightens the eyes and makes the lips shinier. Be careful not to over smudge or over sharpen.

Paste this gradient on top and set it to Hard Light.

Copy the whole image again using Copy Merged and Paste As New Layer. Set it to Multiply and duplicate that layer.

Copy the whole image once again and paste it on top. Use your Burn Tool (size 20, opacity 15) and go over just the eyes to make them a bit brighter.

You can leave it like this or add a border and text. I used this 1 pixel Border Brush, color #156186. Create a new layer and paste it on top.

Using the same color I typed Boss in the font Shrewsbury size 8, kerning set to 95. I used the fill only and bolded it. I then typed the in the font DotumChe size 7, kerning set to 15. Again I used the fill only but not bolded.

I always save it as a Paint Shop Pro file in case I want to change something later. Then save it as a .png file to use on LJs or message boards and you're done.
