The “Do
You Think I’m Serious?” Trip
It was a
dark and stormy night… never mind that, for real now…
October 12,
2002–Macon, GA. This was the day Macon become more than a mile mark on
a trip down to Florida. It
started with a quick decision Thursday night.
I asked Caryn, how about doing something different over this weekend?
Like maybe driving down to Macon for the Farscape cast appearance?
Friday after work we were off.
So
after the 12-hour car ride we arrived, it was a small unassuming strip mall
with a comic book store tucked safely into a corner.
As we walked into the store, it was hard to accept the fact that they
were really there, only 10 feet away. There
was a sparse crowd, likely because this was the last in a long string of cast
appearances in the Atlanta area. This
was a bonus for us since I not only forgot half of my vocabulary, but also
lost the ability to read while Caryn just smiled and stared.
Wish that I had adopted her strategy.
First
person we spoke to was LisaW ::waves::, who proceeded to explain to us how the
signings worked and was very patient as it took us a couple of run-throughs to
understand (cognitive reasoning down to 20% of optimal).
We then explained one of our objectives was to purchase some
autographed items for the troops who held a save Farscape rally in (this is
where I forgot the country’s name and started pointing out the door until
Caryn rescued me) Afghanistan. Paul
and Lani loved the idea and offered complimentary pictures and autographs.
Yay!! We started picking
out our pictures and getting our autographs, when I proceeded to give a
‘Lani’ autograph voucher to Paul (reading skills 0% of optimal).
He proceeded to look at the voucher as if it were a two-headed turtle,
point to it and respond with “Me Paul”.
I must have turned a deeper shade of purple.
Now, if the 12-hour drive didn’t prove I knew who was who, the lost
of optimal function should have.
Even after
that, they were good enough to agree to come outside and take a very memorable
picture by my car with ‘Save Farscape’ written on the windows for the
drive down. It truly was one of
the most unique road trips, and probably Farscape events, ever.
